Italian Barbera

Italian Barbera

As I’ve mentioned, I started my wine journey reading, “Wine for Dummies” because I promised my husband that I would learn to enjoy wine.  I read the book cover to cover in just a few weeks, highlighting and dog-earing pages the entire time.  This is where I was first introduced to Barbera wines.  Because these wines are so food-friendly and pair especially well with everyday dishes, they are always a “go-to” at the wine store when I am struggling to find the right bottle.

Barbera is the most planted grape in the Piedmont region of Northern Italy and the third most planted grape in all of Italy.  Barbera is often referred to as “the people’s wine” because unlike other wines from the region which are saved for special occasions, Barbera is an every-day affordable wine.  And, it is one of the most food-friendly wines in all of Italy!

While Barbera grapes are planted throughout Italy, some of the best Barbera wines come from Piedmont — specifically in the Alba and Asti regions. While the Alba region is mostly known for growing the Nebbiolo grape, the region also produces Barbera wines. Barbera d’Alba wines are made with 100% Barbera grapes.  The wines tend to be dense and structured with a deep color and intense fruit flavor.  Barbera d’Asti wines tend to be a blend of at least 85% Barbera and therefore are not as bold or structured as the wines from d’Alba.  The wines are brighter in color and more elegant in style.   It’s fun to explore and pair wines from each of these areas!

Pairings

Because Barbera is made in many different styles it can be paired with a wide variety of foods. I always like to start my “Simply Paired” pairings with foods from the wine region.  So foods from Northern Italy are a classic pairing.  Creamy risotto, braised meat dishes, pasta in cream or tomato sauces, and anything with mushrooms will pair very well with Barbera wines.   Since Barbera is considered the “everyday wine”, it is the perfect complement to a simple, comfort dish.  Try pairing it with your favorite pizza!
