Italian Etna Bianco

Italian Etna Bianco

I like to try new things – especially wines.  Recently, while shopping at my local wine store, I noticed a white wine from Sicily.  The write up intrigued me: salty and savory with a burst of lemon and minerality.  I’ve never heard a wine described quite like this before so I had to try it.  I am so glad I did!  While these wines tend to be more expensive than I usually like to spend, when paired with the perfect dish it is well worth the money.

The whites of Sicily, especially those from the Mount Etna region, have apparently been earning attention lately because they have been producing a very different style of white wine compared to the more familiar styles like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.  What makes these wines so unique is the combination of the Carricante grape and the volcanic soil in which they are grown.  The wines are high in acidity and relatively low in alcohol which makes them very refreshing yet structured. Etna Bianco wines are one of Italy’s most interesting and compelling wines!  Given the smaller production, they are harder to find which also makes them a bit more expensive.

Pairings

The straw-gold color is striking in the glass and the aroma of citrus and smoke makes me crave grilled seafood. Etna Bianco wines pair beautifully with shellfish or any white fish.  If you like a unique white wine, I think you’ll love the Carricante grape and Etna Bianco white wines. Check out my pairings below.
